Bioinformatics  & BTIS net

Bioinformatics deals with the various issues related to the biological data covering      development of data analysis tools, modelling of biological macromolecules and their complexes, metabolic pathways, designing of new molecules such as drugs, peptides, vaccines, proteins etc.

India was one of the first countries that had taken a giant step in 1986 and established a Nationwide Bio information System of India. This comprises a distributed database and network system namely Biotechnology Information System Network (BTISnet)

Bioinformatics at JBTDRC, MGIMS

Establishment of Bioinformatics Centre at Jamnalal Bajaj Tropical Disease Research Centre, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram was approved by Department of  Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, New Delhi as a part of National Bioinformation Network to establish link amongst Scientists in organizations involved in Biotechnology related research activities. The Centre is actively involved in Immunodiagnostics Research and is conducting National level training courses in Infectious disease diagnostics and Bioinformatics. In addition this Centre publishes SEVAMED, a Quarterly update on Infectious Disease Research and Traditional Medicine. SEVAMED is well received by medical teachers and  scientists through out India.

Medical Informatics at Bioinformatics Centre, MGIMS

Medical Informatics is the art and science of using patient Information for analysis and decision making for the better patient care and management with the help of computer. Need for the  computer in the medical field is growing every day. Considering this fact  the Centre is helping in expansion of the LAN and WAN setup and computerization of this Medical Institute. An ambitious project entitled,"Development of Clinical Informatics at MGIMS" is taking steady shape at this Centre. As a part of this project, LAN in three departments namely Psychiatry, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Bioinformatics Centre has been setup.  'Telemedik' a software  package  developed by IIT Kharagpur for pateints' Information  has been installed in these three departments. Rest of the departments will also be networked in the near future.

'SEVAMED' Quarterly Bibliography on Disease Diagnosis, Pathogenesis, Vaccines & Therapy in Tropical Disease & Certain clinical conditions and News & Views on Advances in Medicine & Traditional Medicine   was released on April 8, 2000 by our  Founder Director  Late. Dr.Sushila Nayar is being regularly published.              Bibliography on 'Mental Stress and Diseases' is added from the    Issue Jan 2003. From the Jan 2002, the journal  'Quarterly  update on Infectious Disease Research  And Traditional Medicine has   been given  ISSN 0972-5903. This has been well received and      appreciated by different colleges/institutes and list of subscribers     is growing day by day.

   Training Courses

First Training Course on 'Introduction to Computer Basics & Access to Biomedical Information' was organized on April 8, 2000. Second National level Workshop on 'Bioinformatics      & Medical Research' was organized during November 24-26, 2000. Third National level Workshop on 'Medical Informatics, Research & Communication' was organized during November 26-28, 2001. Fourth National level Workshop on ' Medical Informatics and Biomedical Communication'  was organized during September 23-25, 2002. Faculty was drawn from    ICMR; BHU, Varanasi; SMIMS, Sikkim. Dr. K Satyanarayana & Dr. N. C. Jain from ICMR conducted an interesting session on 'Biomedical Communication'. National Level  ICMR-WHO workshop on "Storage and Retrieval of Information "  was held during Dec 10-12,2002.
